Are you a fan of the show Rick and Morty? Are you having withdrawals because the newest season is not even scheduled yet? Well, you can at least ease the pain of waiting by playing Pocket Mortys. Pocket Mortys is a free game app for Android and IOS where you catch Mortys and battle them. Yes, I know what you are thinking it’s basically Pokemon with Rick and Morty. In all honesty, it basically is. It has the concept of Pokemon with gathering badges and catching and healing Pokemon, but instead of catching Pokemon you catch Mortys and the gym leaders you defeat are the Council of Ricks. Even the name is a variation of Pocket Monsters which was the name for the manga in Japan.
There are all sorts of Mortys from all different dimensions including Fork Morty, Blue Shirt Morty, Spooky Morty, and so many other variations of Morty! There is even a log to help you catch them all. The game includes all sorts of characters from the show including Bird-Person, Jerry, Mr. Poopy-Butthole, and so many more. Justin Roiland who is one of the co-creators of Rick and Morty also voices Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith in the game and television show. So you get Rick quips and Morty-isms thrown in while playing the game.
The story to the game is to collect enough badges to defeat the Council of Ricks. You can also go on quests and craft items. The animation style looks exactly like the television show so it feels like you are actually in the world of Rick and Morty. The graphics are okay, but when the Mortys’ attack the same visual is repeated, so it gets monotonous.
I was really excited to play this game, but in all honestly, I became bored with it. I really like Rick and Morty, but after a while I became disinterested in the game and didn’t really care about objective anymore. While I love the Pokemon game homage, I would rather play Pokemon than this game.
So would I recommend playing this game? If you really miss Rick and Morty and just want to see the characters, then this is the game for you. If you can wait, you can pass on this game and just watch reruns of Rick and Morty until the new season. You know what they say, “waiting makes the heart grow fonder.”
