Christmas was this week! While I am a little late to post about the holidays. I am doing it anyway! Enjoy the Holiday Cheer!
This Holiday season I really wanted to find something joyful, cheerful, and full of holiday spirit to play. These days I look forward to Christmas less and less. I have my reasons for my lack of holiday joy. I thought maybe a nice holiday game would make my heart grow three sizes or something. That being said, this isn’t a therapy session, this is about me wondering what games to play with the holiday break.
The holidays are a time to relax. A time to enjoy time with family and friends. If you’re alone, maybe it’s just a good time to treat yourself and have some self-care. Curling up with a nice hot drink and staying warm and cozy. I was thinking about it as I drove down to spend my holiday break with my family. What makes a good holiday game? I want a game that is as warm as a hug and brings the holiday spirit like a well-made cup of eggnog. So I figured something cozy would do it. I thought the perfect holiday game would be relaxing to play. An easygoing time and maybe a little nostalgic.
Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing, maybe Palia. Any of them fit the cozy vibe and are relaxing experiences. Perfect for grabbing a hot drink, planting some crops or helping some villagers. They feel really great for the whole spirit of giving the vibe of the holidays. I suppose you could also put games like Minecraft or Terraria in this category. Sandbox games definitely maximize on the coziness especially if you are peaceful. Although they all have one issue which is the atmosphere doesn’t quite feel right. Maybe something with more snow would be better.
I had someone tell me that Skyrim was a Christmas game for them. It made sense to me. The game is all snowy and it also fits that cozy gaming idea. I know the game is mostly killing stuff but it isn’t overly challenging and there is a lot of downtime. So I thought Skyrim fit pretty well. Not to mention with some modding magic. You can make Skyrim holiday themed. The magic of Christmas was mods the whole time.
If I am spending time with family, though, I thought maybe multiplayer games were the way to go. So I thought some friend slop games would be good. Stuff like Jackbox. Maybe Peak, there is a whole snow area and I could force my friends and family to sit in one of the hot springs. Honestly, that is all I’d want to do in Peak for Christmas. Just sit in the hot tub in the game while I drink something warm outside of the game.
After all my consideration, I don’t know what would even be a great holiday game. Nothing really caught the spark for me. Nothing brought that warm fuzzy feeling for me.
Board games also crossed my mind. I figure that might be what I go with. Because what’s a better way to bond as a family? Playing board games which will probably ruin your relationship with loved ones!
I decided to stop worrying about it. I was away from my gaming rig by this point and surrounded by family and my sibling’s children. I love my nieces and nephews but goodness they are uncontainable. Christmas came and went and I decided that was fine. I had slept a ton and relaxed a lot. I didn’t game as much as I wanted but hey, I spent time with loved ones.
I decided I am gonna force my family to play my new copy of Daggerheart. Nothing like some Table-Top Roleplaying to bring out the holiday joy. A nice winter one shot! Their confusion at the rules of a table top will probably bring on the warm fuzzies for me!
Whatever game you choose to spend your holidays with. I hope it is nostalgic, cozy, and you have a good time. Happy Holidays and enjoy the new year! Play some games for all of us at Geekwave!
